Acupuncture is a centuries-old healing art. Oriental cultures practiced it, focusing on energy meridians or pathways that we have in our bodies. The Chinese had a book to centralize the concepts and techniques of acupuncture nearly 3,000 years ago.

Recently, a frozen fossilized man called Otsi was found in the Italian Alps. There were tattoos on his skin which were recognized as common acupuncture points. Research scientists learned that if these were indeed acupuncture treatment points, Otsi would have been suffering from digestive parasites and arthritis -- exactly the conditions they found when they further examined his body.

The really interesting part of this story is that Otsi was the first connection to acupuncture that scientists have found outside the Asian and Indian continents. And, that carbon dating identifies Otsi as living nearly 5,300 years ago, or over 2,000 years earlier than the earliest Chinese acupuncture records.

Today, medical acupuncture has evolved from the earlier traditions. Practitioners have medical verification of how and why acupuncture works, and acupuncture is being more widely accepted by the traditional medical community.
