Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a healing art which uses extremely diluted plant extracts and minerals as dietary supplements. These act as trigger mechanisms for health, the philosophy behind it being that "like cures like". It works very much the way vaccinations and allergy shots work.

A very small portion of a substance is introduced to the body which causes symptoms similar to the ones the patient has for a complaint. The immune system, hormonal system, etc. sense the presence of an extra substance to deal with, and begin to react to it. They build antibodies, raise or lower inflammatory responses, increase or decrease circulation to key areas, all to adjust to the homeopathic remedy. In the process of doing this, the body is also adjusting to the similar symptoms of the original complaint, and the system is coaxed to return to balance.

Remember, with vaccinations, the goal is to have the body make antibodies to protect against the flu or measles for example. With allergy shots, the person is given doses of the same substance that gives them an allergic reaction, to "increase their tolerance." With homeopathics, the remedy is a trigger mechanism, and the patient's body does most of the work creating the new proteins and enzymes the homeopathic practitioner has chosen for restored health.

Homeopathic supplements are given orally, not by injection. The principle is the same, however. A tiny bit of a plant substance is swallowed, and in an undetectable way, aggravates the problem's symptoms on a molecular level. The body's own healing defenses will be given a little push to deal with the problem, and the body will begin to heal itself.

Homeopathy is not the answer for every condition, nor for every person. It is, however, a gentle and effective component to use as part of an overall plan for individual wellness.
